Jesters Flat Tournament – Nov 14th & 15th
Qualia News
This was the 2nd last tournament for the year and with our Nationals horses (Stoneage Giggle, Riom Curlew and Rosebrook Archer) packed away and getting fat on a well earned break it was a good chance for us to take our younger horses along and play in a less competitive environment. Our club, Foothills, fielded an A Grade team and although it was not your normal high level comp it still featured a lot of the Nationals players, just on younger horses.
Adrian played Barnetts Lady Jane who had suffered an injury earlier in the year so has been spelled for a few months and now back in work for the camp-draft season. Although she is not green it was really good for this mare to be playing without the high pressure and physicality of normal A Grade which she has now been playing full time for 2 seasons. She hasn’t even had a chance to play B Grade as yet! She played both the No 3 and 1 positions and was free flowing and confident throughout the whole weekend.
I played on Stoneage Slips, her first ‘real’ tournament!! She has only ever played about 6 chukkas up until this weekend as we having been taking her very slowly, giving her time to mature and grow as she is a fairly petite type of mare. I played her in the No 2 spot and she just got better every chukka and every game. Her natural balance and ability made her an absolute pleasure to play. And to come away with an A Grade win at her first go was the icing on the cake!
We were also very excited when Barnetts Ali, who we trained and played previously then sold on earlier this year, was awarded the Champion D Grade pony prize with her new owner! Well done to Justin and Ali for making such a great combination!

Qualia News
Hosting your own tournament is a seriously stressful job so we decided not to play and try and help out as much as possible. Also, we were playing on Saturday night for WA in the State of Origin Match which was held under lights.
Rosebrook Archer had to stay in work for an extra week to play this game and he handled everything really well. He was played by Adrian in the No 2 position between Aiden Thurkle and Justy Fleay. The boys were a little outplayed by the World Team of Trent Cooper, Rob Sibley and Michael Semmens but Archer did an admirable job and some handy off the ball marking up.
I was lucky enough to be loaned Kelly Stewart’s mare Rosebrook Abelia (who is currently for sale) for the match and also for a few weeks before that. Big thanks to Kelly as she was a real star on the night! I played her in the No 2 spot and although we started a little scratchy with Jane Cooper taking the first few possessions we found our groove and managed to get hold of a lot of ball for the WA Team! It was a great game and was really enjoyed by all spectators.

South Midlands Tournament August 29th & 30th 2009
South Midlands club held the first tournament within the central zone for the 2009 WA season and with 42 teams nominated it was certainly going to be a big weekend! The weather didn’t look all that favourably on Friday with trucks rolling in before lunchtime, but it had cleared by Saturday morning which dawned very cold and frosty. The excitement had actually started before the teams had even taken the field with the host club’s captain Ben Thomas and wife Suzette Thomas (recent Australian captain) welcoming their very first child, a baby girl, on the Friday night! This did throw a little spanner in the works for the South Midlands A Grade with Ben being one of the strongest players, but Suz, ever the good polocrosse wife, gave Ben a leave pass and he arrived just in time for their afternoon game against the Walkaway team. Jeff Martin was back from injury for them and doubled up for their first game in the morning.
Walkaway, although missing one of their strongest players in Trent Cooper, did provide one of the upsets for the weekend rolling the South Midlands Team on Saturday. They also had another good win against Foothills in the morning and the strong and well horsed Perth team also went through undefeated. With 5 teams this set up a big clash between Perth and South Midlands Sunday morning with Souths needing the win to still be in contention and they pulled it off after a slow start against a flat looking Perth team. This put a real spin on the afternoon game between Walkway and Perth!! If Walkaway were to win they would take the cup but if Perth won it would all go down to goal count between Souths, Perth and Walkway who all would have 3 wins on the board each after South Midlands got some runs on the board against Foothills that afternoon.
The so called ‘final’ provided some fantastic fast action and skilful polocrosse and with PJ Hall changing to a 3 and finally finding some form after a few quiet games in the number 2 spot, their chukka of Rob Sibley, Matt Welsh and PJ kicked away from the Walkway team throwing a big 7-0 chukka in the 5th. But unfortunately this wasn’t enough to secure them the 6 goal win they needed to take the trophy and South Midlands ran out the eventual winners on goal count. Not a great way to win, but it was a win for the blue and reds all the same!
There was also some great polocrosse played in the B Grade which had a massive 7 teams in the mix! With Moony and Greenough not being able to field an A Grade due to some absent players and Walkway fielding 2 teams they were certainly some of the favourites. The mix of young and old players for the Foothills club were also doing some damage and after some very close games including the final which ended in a draw due to a very unfortunate accident they were the winners!!
Well done to the South Midlands club on a great weekend and good to see so many teams and good polocrosse played throughout the weekend.
Qualia News
Lady Jane and Giggle played their first full tournaments of the season in our Foothills A Grade side. The standard of the A Grade competition this year has been incredibly strong and this weekend was no exception. Although our team was undermanned and inexperienced compared to the other side’s both mares played some really good, tough polocrosse against much more experienced and hardened horses so we couldn’t have been more pleased with them.

Greenough Tournament
With sunshine forecast and lovely, green fields (which was fantastic to see!!) the Greenough Tournament drew quite a large number of teams, 36 in total. There were 6 teams in the A Grade and a massive 10 in the C Grade which must have been quite a nightmare for the club to organise games and a draw! But everything ran quite smoothly with just a slight drizzle of rain on Saturday morning, just to keep the dust down!

We were part of the ‘young horse’ Foothills A Grade team for this tournament and at the end of the day the team went very well and all players did their jobs superbly. Barnetts Ali played her first game of Polocrosse and went above and beyond what was expected of her so we couldn’t have been more pleased. She has now been sold and we are looking forward to this talented mare continuing to impress her new owner.
Rosebrook Archer also had another very good weekend with a solid performance in the No 1 position with Tivs. Archer played against some of the strongest No 3 horses in WA and displayed determination and athleticism throughout all games.
Due to us unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, being put out of the running for the A Grade final on Saturday we were able to play other horses on Sunday. Lady Jane was played by Tivs and Giggle by Jodi and both mares, albeit fat and very unfit, put in a good, competitive performance. This was Giggle’s first run in the A Grade and she had the difficult task of playing against a very in form and much fitter ‘Spring Brook Hightide’ (ridden by Trish Jones) who did happen to take out the A Grade Champion Pony Award! I know Giggle and I are certainly looking forward to a rematch at the first Zone carnival in September!
